As part of Third Street Music Settlement’s LiveSounds concert series, Adam Tendler, with pianists Julia Den Boer, Joan Forsyth, Mira Gill, Michelle Kalisz, Vanessa Lee, Nnenna Ogwo, Roger Peltzman, Eli Wallace and Alexander Wu, present Paul Hindemith’s epic piano odyssey, Ludus Tonalis (1942), in honor of the composer’s and Third Street’s 125th birthday.

For this unique presentation of the complete Ludus Tonalis, two pianos will face each other, with pianists seamlessly trading movements throughout the performance.

Hindemith’s 20th century answer to Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, Ludus Tonalis takes the listener, key by key, through a series of fugues and interludes in which Hindemith explores the art of counterpoint, texture, melody and harmony through his own personal and unmistakable musical language. The volume begins with a prelude and ends with a postlude, itself an exact retrograde inversion of the opening movement.

This opportunity to hear Hindemith’s ever-intriguing, rarely-performed masterpiece, in an unforgettable multi-piano multi-pianist format, is free and open to the public, with no ticket or reservation required.
